Sneak Peek:
|
January 27 - February 17, 2017
Union Art Gallery, Milwaukee, WI |
This exhibition provided an intimate look into 10 private collections in the Milwaukee area. It promoted the unique and various ways in which these local collectors began their own collections, as well as how their interests and beliefs influence their personal collections. It also advocated that collections can start small and inexpensive, there is no one right way to collect art.
I was approached by the gallery manager to share some works from the private collection I was managing. We decided to showcase a few of the self portraits in the collection, an area of interest and focus for the collectors. Since the exhibition was titled "Sneak Peek" and promoted seeing these private and personal collections, I decided to also include the personal way in which they are displayed on a daily bases. I found similar wall paper that you might find in the collectors' home and hung the work with that as their backdrop. This gives the work a context and a feel you don't typically see in an art gallery. I also included artist-made furniture from their home that they use regularly. This was to demonstrate that they live with the work they collect and enjoy it being a part of their lives.
Exhibiting collectors: Sequoia Blackwell, Debra Brehmer, Portia Cobb, Josie Osborne & Kim Cosier, Carole Grgich, Keith Nelson, Paul & Laura Phelps, Sandy Robinson, Jan Serr & John Shannon, and Della Wells
